Differences from the previous games[]

Super Mario Maker & Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS[]

  • The Title Screen easter eggs from the Wii U game are removed. Touching a letter in the Super Mario Maker logo triggered specific actions, one for each interactable part of the logo.

Gameplay[]

  • You can now make courses in the Super Mario 3D World game style!
  • Lava mechanics have changed: some Course Parts are not affected by Lava, Course Parts sink faster, and sinking Course Parts cannot be spin-jumped off of.
  • Yoshi's Eggs do not turn into a power-up when the limit of Yoshis is reached, instead they simply disappear.
  • Big Yoshi Eggs become Big Red Yoshi's Eggs and do not hatch into two running Yoshis, but instead they hatch into one Red Yoshi, which spits fire.
  • The remaining time displayed is now rounded down instead of up.
  • The edges of One-Way Walls cannot be stood on.
  • Spiny Mario can't break blocks on top of Pipes when coming out of them.
  • Small Mario can crouch in all Game Styles.
  • Small Buzzy or Spiny Mario is no longer immune to enemies from the side while crouching.
  • All helmet sprites have been redesigned.
  • Super Mario in a Shoe now has Super Mario's hitbox and must crouch to fit under 1-block gaps.
  • If a Shell hits a POW Block in midair, the Shell is defeated, the same as if Mario threw the POW Block into it.
  • Mario can change direction while crouching.
  • Mario is unable to enter a Warp Door while dashing.
  • Pipes only spawn one Shoe/Stiletto Goomba at a time.
  • Bill Blasters and Cannons on Munchers can be crushed against a ceiling.
  • Vines now reset the points that players get by jumping on enemies when climbed.
  • Dropping a POW Block in front of a Piranha Plant will defeat the Piranha Plant.
  • One-Way Walls have stricter collision; standing close enough inside a horizontal One-Way Wall will push Mario through.
  • POW Blocks and P Switches have a new flashing animation in all Classic Game Styles.
  • Grinders in the Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros. U Game Styles now make sounds.
  • For changes specific to a particular Game Style, see here: SMB SMB3 SMW NSMBU

Course Making[]

  • The Parts menu is revamped, now using a series of radial menus with the 12 most recent Parts (if nothing is pinned) being displayed at the top of the screen.
  • Instead of shaking a Course Part to change its type, they are now available as a menu by holding down on the part. This also allows you to access the Super Mushroom modifier (although it can still be accessed by drag-and-drop).
  • Wings are no longer part of the Parts menu, as they are now accessed by the alternate types pop-up menu.
  • Checkpoint Flag, Skewer, Key, Monty Mole, Bumper and Bowser Jr. are all now unique Parts rather than alternate types. The same goes for Fish Bones, allowing them to go on land and Dry Bones underwater.
  • Checkpoint Flags now grant no power-up when hit by default instead of a Super Mushroom, and can now be given any power-up to grant.
  • Sub Areas are by default the same theme as the main Area when created.
  • In general, there are less types of Parts that can be stacked in front of each other. Notably, Pipes cannot be stacked, Conveyor Belts can't be stacked behind Pipes, and One-Way Walls cannot be stacked behind Pipes.
  • The Start Ground now is 7 blocks long and contains a 7-tile wide by 3 tile tall region above it where no Course Parts can be placed. The Start and Goal Ground now also links to other Ground tiles.
  • Ground (Part) tiles now have their own Part Limit, with a maximum of 4000 Ground tiles.
  • One-Way Walls and Arrow Signs now share the same Part Limit.
  • Checkpoint Flags can no longer face diagonally, and have a different look in the New Super Mario Bros. U Game Style, to fit better with the other Game Styles.
  • Unchained Chomps, Angry Wigglers, Lit Bob-ombs, Bull's-eye Blasters, Red Cannons, and Fast Lava Lifts have their own voice clips instead of using their main type's voice clip.

Course World[]

  • Level codes are shorter, but can now contain any letter (except I, O, or J)
  • Levels can now have descriptions.
  • Instead of starring levels, the player can either say "I Like It!" or "Boo!"
  • The 100-Mario Challenge was removed, with Endless Challenge taking its place.
  • 100 courses can be uploaded by a single Maker (exactly the same as the original), but medals are not required to unlock courses.
    • Originally, this was only 32.
    • It was increased to 64 on July 24th, 2019.
    • It was increased to 100 on January 6th, 2020.
